It's a Box of Rain Camp-a-Thon!
Help us raise $6,000 to cover our transportation expenses for this year's Box of Rain summer camp! Every penny earned from Box of Rain's Camp-a-Thon will fund summer camp expenses for our 45 young campers!
Since 2003, Box of Rain has funded a maritime camp for Annapolis at-risk youth every summer. This year's camp begins June 22nd! Our 45 campers, aged 8 through 14, will get to experience 14 awesome maritime days learning to sail, kayak, fish, paddle board, and swim. They'll learn about our Chesapeake Bay environment and participate in a live interaction with Nautilus scientists on the ocean floor. They'll tour a college and see Assateague National Park, where many will experience the ocean for the first time. They'll learn the meaning of teamwork. And they'll graduate camp with a true sense of accomplishment.
Coached by our Lead Counselors (most of whom came up through Box of Rain), six rising Freshmen Box of Rainers will start training as Junior Counselors; they'll learn leadership skills, build self-confidence, earn a wage through meaningful work, and have something to boast about on their resume!
The camp is 100% free of charge to these young kids, and includes transportation, two meals, supervision, and all activity fees. And that's a good thing, because nearly all Box of Rain kids reside in public or subsidized housing. Many have never experienced walking on a beach or building a sand castle, much less taking the helm of a sailboat.
Transportation is one of our biggest expenses. We need $6,000 this year to cover our summer camp transportation costs. Every penny earned from Box of Rain's Camp-a-Thon will fund summer camp expenses for our young campers!

How Box of Rain Started...
In 2002, a local sailor's life was taken away by several young African American youth in Annapolis. In the spirit of Lee Griffin's love of community, friends decided to respond with love and founded Box of Rain, named after Lee's sailboat. Since then, Box of Rain has mentored more than 500 at-risk youth in Annapolis through maritime programs. We currently have more than 50 youth under our wing. Most reside in public or subsidized housing. Our goal is to ensure that these youth get the guidance, self confidence, and sense of accomplishment they need to gain a path to independence.
Box of Rain was named the 2014 nonprofit of the year by the Annapolis Chamber of Commerce, and was recognized in 2015 as an Outstanding Nonprofit by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
Take a few minutes and just give what you can! Anything you contribute will be so much appreciated by our Box of Rain kids.
